Schneeberg Crossing
For those who want to experience the Schneeberg, the highest mountain in Lower Austria, in its entirety, this tour is highly recommended.
We start at the Weichtalhaus (547 m) at the banks of the crystal-clear river Schwarza in the Höllental (hell valley), some 1500 m below the summit of Schneeberg.
We hike/scramble through the Weichtalklamm, an impressive gorge and one of the most interesting natural formations of the Viennese Alps up to Kienthaler-Hütte (1380 m). From there, it is still a long way to the summit, the Klosterwappen (2076 m), which offers us a fantastic view over Rax, Schneealpe and Hochschwab.
The Fischerhütte, where we will spend the night, is only a short walk away from there. We can watch the sun going down before we have a good rest to recover for the next day.
In the morning we turn east towards Damböckhaus and further down until we reach the Southern Grafensteig, which we will follow for a few hours in ups and downs (approx. 350 m in total) and downs until we reach the Kienthaler-Hütte. From there it is still another 850 m down the Ferd. Mayr-Weg, until we are back at the Weichtalhaus and finish our spectacular loop.
